The Laurel Microschool
Some estimates put the number of micro-schools in the United States at around 125,000. An internet search yields numerous definitions for the term microschool. At Laurel, we see it as a small by design environment where children learn in a mixed-age classroom or Form. Form One serves students in grades K-3, and Form Two serves grades 4-8. Depending on the subject, instruction covers the gamut from one-on-one to all-school.
Our concept is based loosely on the one-room schoolhouses that used to dominate American education. While they are no longer the norm, we see many positive benefits from this environment, including controlling tuition and expenses, group learning, and creating a family-like learning environment.
